Wiarton Airport
FOTA/COPA Flight #68
Aviation Scholarship

Description & Entry Requirements

PREAMBLE:
FOTA/COPA (Friends Of The Airport/Canadian Owners and Pilots Association) is a volunteer group, composed of airport enthusiasts who are interested in the success of our local airport. Our group supports the Airport manager in the day-to-day operations and is engaged in a number of airport promotion initiatives. By sponsoring this aviation scholarship we are extending our support to those individuals in our community who wish to follow commercial flying as a career.

ELIGIBILITY:
FOTA/COPA is associated with the Wiarton Airport and thus the scholarship is offered for those who have permanent residence status in either the Country of Bruce or the County of Grey.

PRE-REQUISITES:
FOTA/COPA recognizes that a career in aviation can be very rewarding both in job satisfaction and in monetary rewards; however to establish this career is not an easy path. Those embarking on this choice must be dedicated to the task and be able to turn their hands to the myriad of associated jobs allied to aviation: you have to pay your dues before you obtain a well paying job in the industry. To this end we have compiled a list of pre-requites that are considered essential to establishing a successful flying career.

  1. Be physically fit and able to pass a commercial medical examination.
  2. Have maintained a 75% average or greater in High School.
  3. Have proven acceptance into a recognized Aviation College.
  4. Be a team person and be able to demonstrate involvement in school team sports, or other club or team activities.
  5. Be willing to tackle any job to further your career objectives.
  6. Have shown an interest in aviation, such as volunteering at the airport, active membership of Air Cadets, etc.
  7. Have flown in a light aircraft (flights in large commercial passenger airliners are not acceptable as a substitute.) In cases where the applicant has met all other criteria expecting flight in a light aircraft, a FOTA/COPA member will introduce the applicant to flying in a light aircraft.
  8. Upon successful completion of an aviation course, be willing to work away from home in remote communities to gain experience with small aviation companies.
  9. Pass a FOTA/COPA interview.

THE AVIATION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD FUNDS:
An award of $500.00 will be donated annually to an individual entering a flying career in commercial aviation. The funds are specifically donated to assist in the purchase of books and materials required for the successful completion of the course of instruction.

CONDITIONS:

  1. Applications for the FOTA/COPA Aviation Scholarship shall be made in writing or email on or before the 30th, June, of the year of award. The awards committee will review each application and prepare a short list of applicants to be interviewed. Short listed applicants will be advised by late July and interviews conducted in early August of the year of the award. The successful applicant will be advised by mid August of that year.
  2. All applications will be reviewed by the awards committee, which will be appointed by the FOTA/COPA Executive in office.
  3. The decision of FOTA/COPA awards committee is final.
  4. The successful applicant shall undertake to complete the course culminating in a commercial flying license. If the applicant drops out of the course prior to its successful conclusion, for other than health reasons, which would prohibit obtaining a commercial license, the applicant agrees to refund the award monies to FOTA/COPA.

AWARDS COMMITTEE COMPOSITION:
The Awards Committee will consist of three individuals appointed by the FOTA/COPA Executive in office at the time of the Award. These individuals will be selected based on their background and generally (but not exclusively) fall into the following categories: a person practicing a current commercial flying career, the Airport Manager, a mature member of FOTA/COPA.

STEWARDSHIP OF FUNDS:

  1. Funds will be placed in a separate interest bearing account used solely for the Aviation Scholarship. Scholarship awards will be disbursed from this account.
  2. In cases where there are no qualified applicants for the Scholarship in a particular year, FOTA/COPA will not contribute to the fund for that year.
  3. If no qualified applicants apply over a time period of five consecutive years, FOTA/COPA retains the right to discontinue the Aviation Scholarship.
