CO-CAPTAIN's MESSAGE:
The month of August has certainly been a busy one in this part of the woods!

COPA BY-ELECTION:
First of all, I would like to thank everyone for supporting my candidacy in the COPA by-Election ... the winner was announced on August 14, and I am honored to be your representative on the COPA Board. A special thanks to my opponent Phil Englishman, who was one of the first to congratulate me and offer his support in any way he could. Much appreciated Phil!

COPA APPRECIATION AWARD - Barry Parker:
Later that same week, President Kevin Psutka contacted me with my first directorial duty - the presentation of a COPA Appreciation Award to Barry Parker in Collingwood. Due to circumstances beyond his control, Kevin was unable to attend the Platinum Triangle Poker Run on August 18, when the award was to be presented.

Barry Parker learned to fly in 1957 as an Air Cadet at the Toronto Flying Club in Malton ON, in both a Cessna 172 and a Fleet Canuck. Unfortunately, his career in the Metropolitan Toronto Police department and other business interests kept him grounded until his re-certification in 1997. The demise of Georgian Bay Airways (flight training/plane rentals in Collingwood) occurred in 1998, and Barry, aided by then manager Dick Hutton, became the driving force behind the Collingwood Flying Club. The club started with 10 area aviation enthusiasts who contributed seed money towards the purchase of a 1968 Cessna 177 Cardinal (C-FQEK). Today, with 16 active members, C-FQEK can be found at most air related activities with one of the members at the controls.

Barry has also been very active with the CCAF Gathering of the Classics Fly-Ins (1998-2001) and flying Young Eagles in the club plane.

On behalf of Kevin Psutka, we would like to thank Barry for his contributions to Aviation and wish him continued success with his endeavors.

PLATINUM TRIANGLE POKER RUN:
This year's event turned out to be another huge success!

The 5 best hands received a cash prize, and the next 55 best hands received prizes consisting of log books, shirts, hats, dinners, etc.

Lee Anne Lehman, organizer this year, has calculated a profit of $2517.59, all of which has been donated to Habitat for Humanity, South Georgian Bay.

On behalf of airport managers Peter Lajoie and Lee Anne Lehman, we would like to thank everyone who participated in the run, joined us in Collingwood on August 18th for the festivities, and especially to the sponsors of this event!

Next year's Run will be hosted by Kincardine (NS7) - watch for details!

COPA APPRECIATION AWARD - Guy Doherty:
Earlier this year, on behalf of COPA Flight #68, I submitted Guy Doherty's name and a brief bio to Tony Swain of COPA, as a nomination for a COPA Appreciation Award for all of Guy's contributions to Aviation in and around the Owen Sound area.
We were all pleased to learn in July that Guy had been selected for this prestigious award! On Saturday, September 1, it was my pleasure to present Guy with his plaque at our regular Flight meeting.

Guy was born, raised and educated in Owen Sound. After graduating from High School, he decided to enter the Aviation field as his chosen career. In 1978 he went to work at Wiarton Airport (CYVV), employed by Owen Sound Air Services, as an apprentice working towards his AME license. In March of 1984 he obtained his AME and went to work for Sound Air at Toronto Pearson Airport. After a year there, he returned to Owen Sound and went to work with Superior Propane, where he stayed for the next 11 years, working his way up the corporate ladder to Manager of the Owen Sound Branch. However, he still maintained his AME, and when time permitted, he used his weekends to work on aircraft.

In 1996 Guy decided that a career change was in order, so he rented a heated hangar at Owen Sound (CYOS) and has been there ever since, growing his business. Not only is Guy an outstanding mechanic, he also encourages his customers to work with him on their aircraft at its annual maintenance. This way, the customer gets to know first hand about the working of the aircraft.

For the past 8 years, Guy Doherty has single-handedly organized a Winter Maintenance Seminar (Rust Remover), always in February, where he has two Transport Canada people in attendance giving interesting talks on aviation, rules and regulations, two representatives from the aviation community at large, talking about their products, door prizes, and lunch, all for only $5.00 per person. At the end of the day, all pilots in attendance receive their two-year Transport Canada mandatory recurrency training sticker.

Congratulations Guy, and continued success in the aviation industry!

until next month!
