CO-CAPTAIN's MESSAGE:

On February 12, I was invited by Ken Scott (charter member of FOTA [Friends of the Airport, [1996]and lifetime member of COPA Flight #68) to speak to another group he belongs to - the Silver Cs of Owen Sound - about the Wiarton/Keppel Airport. The Silver Cs are a group of retired men (current membership of 90) who meet every Tuesday morning for fellowship and participate in various volunteer activities such as Meals On Wheels, etc. I presented to the group our powerpoint of the Wiarton Airport from its beginning in 1947 to present, including the major political problems it is facing today. There were many good questions from the audience (67 members in attendace!), and in appreciation for my visit, I was presented with a Silver Cs Thank You certificate, complete with a song they had written about my involvement with the community since moving here in 1989! As an added bonus, the Silver Cs Choir then sang the song to me - what a touching way to personalize a thank-you! I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this group and thank them for allowing me the opportunity!

Three days after my visit with the Silver Cs, I was on the road again, this time heading to Chatham. I met up with Marc Dumay, Captain of COPA Flight #95, which is located in Windsor. Saturday morning, Marc picked me up from the hotel and we traveled to Windsor for their 8:00am breakfast meeting at the Windsor Flying Club. Folks from Flight #95, the EAA, RAA, 99's and the Windsor Historical Aircraft Association made up the 32 members in attendance. I presented the 406 ELT and Platinum Triangle Poker Run powerpoint, both of which were well received and followed by much discussion. Some questions they posed pertaining to COPA insurance covering their participation in Young Eagles flights I could not answer right then, but with the help of John Quarterman from COPA Headquarters I was able to send the information back to them a few days later. It was refreshing to meet the enthusiastic members of Flight #95 and their friends - Marc, thanks to you and your group for your hospitality and I look forward to visiting again in the future!

February 27 was a busy day - Lorne Schroeder and I left early that cold windy morning, heading to Wingham to speak to the CAGO (Community Airports Group of Ontario) group. Representatives from each of the 19 airports that make up this group were in attendance to view first-hand our powerpoint on the new rules and regulations for the Platinum Triangle Poker Run and receive an information pamphlet on the Eileen Vollick Celebration. We had very positative feedback regarding the new format of the Poker Run, as well as with the suggestion to involve the local COPA groups from the participating airports. A special thanks to Pierre Lajoie, chair of CAGO and Jim Scott, marketing director for giving us the opportunity to speak at this meeting!

We left the CAGO meeting and headed directly to Owen Sound for Guy Doherty's Annual Rust Remover Seminar. Despite the weather, a total of 59 people were in attendance - including 11 who had never before been to one of Guy's seminars. As usual, Guy had a great line-up for the day - guest speakers were Greg Mansel from Leavens Aviation, who talked about engine care and storage practices; Wayne Juniper from Transport Canada who spoke on CARS 2007-2, maintenance changes and the new 406 ELT regulation; and Dr. Gino Ferri, who has written a book titled Wilderness Survival (available at local bookstores) -- a must read for pilots! Many door prizes were won, and pizza was served to keep our strength up! A great afternoon enjoyed by all - and a huge thank you to Guy for all your efforts!

Until next month!
