CO-CAPTAIN's MESSAGE:
On Sunday, May 6, Lorne and Lorna Schroeder invited me to go for a flight to Wingham (CPR7) and Sexsmith (CSX7), two places I have never visited! Upon arrival at Wingham, we noticed a lot of activity on the ground with a tow plane and a couple of gliders. After we landed, we introduced ourselves to Sean Murphy (former manager of Hanover Airport) who filled us in on what was happening.

Wingham virtually operates on its own, with fuel available on the honor system. Sean explained that Wingham was headquarters for Air Cadet glider operation and has been since 1996. In the spring and fall they fly as many air cadets as possible from squadrons located within a 70 mile radius. Sean then gave us some interesting statistics: - approximately 320 glider pilots are trained every summer; 1 out of every 5 private pilots in Canada are ex-air cadets; and 63% of commercial pilots got their start in the air cadets!

Sean then introduced us to Major Dave Gruber, who invited me for a first-time glider ride which I accepted! My pilot was Tim Kuntz from Listowel who allowed me to take the controls when we were cut loose from the tow plane - what a blast!! We did a couple of 360° turns, then Tim landed the bird ever so quietly.

Thanks to everyone at Wingham for their generosity and a great visit!

From Wingham we flew to Sexsmith, which is a couple of kilometers outside of Exeter. The grass strip (90/27) is 3100' in length and really in good shape. We took a walking tour of the unique airport - there is a small club room available to pilots and 25-30 aircraft row hangars, (all with no doors yet excellent shelter!).While touring we noticed that there was a memorial marker to Leonard Greb -- after some investigation we found that Leonard was the former owner of the property that the airport was built on, and that Leonard is actually buried there! plaque reads: Leonard Greb, 1909-1998, a pilot's friend, Sexsmith Flyers Exeter RAA

On the way home we dropped into gas up at Kincardine (CNS7) and shared some stories with Carol and Dave Little, who, as of May 31, have left their duties as Manager of Kincardine to take up the life of the semi-retired. Enjoy Carol & Dave!

Best wishes to new Airport Manager, Blake Evans (owner and operator of Evans Flying School)!

On May 13, Lorne and I flew into Edenvale (CNV8) to check out their newly opened restaurant called Dine & Fly.

We were greeted by the owner's brother Jeremy Martin who looked after us until owner Tanya Martin arrived. We had a nice chat with Tanya and took some pictures. Their restaurant should become very popular as it will serve both the aviation community and the highway traffic. They have a fine kitchen, service is great and prices are reasonable - next time you are in the area drop in and pay Tanya a visit!

The course is open and golfers are testing their skills on this championship-style course.

I was invited to the Grand Opening of Cobble Beach Golf Links, held on May 22. It was a perfect day weather-wise, with the festivities held outdoors. Allan Barfoot, mayor, Dwight Burley, deputy mayor, and most of the council of Georgian Bluffs were in attendance, as well as Larry Miller, MP and Ruth Lovell, mayor, Owen Sound.

After the speeches from the dignitaries in attendance, owner Willis McLeese took the podium and gave an outstanding speech of a dream come true for him in the building of Cobble Beach.

After the ribbon cutting and photo opportunities, an excellent array of food was served by the 5-star chef and his helpers.

I was pleased to be able to get a photograph of Mr. & Mrs. McLeese, a delightful couple! We wish them well in the building of homes on their property, scheduled to commence later this year!

Be sure to schedule yourself a round of Golf at Cobble Beach this season - its an unforgettable experience on a beautiful setting - just north of Owen Sound on Georgian Bay.

Join us next month as we celebrate our 100th edition!
