With parents and chaperone on hand, our first group of 15 Young Eagles were at the airport and eager to get into the air by 0900 on Saturday June 11.... but the weather had a different idea. The ceiling had dropped to 400 feet with visibility of about a mile. With help from our on-site weather office operator Ray Currie, it was estimated that we would be on the ground until 1100. 15 excited kids (with more scheduled to appear any minute), and 2 hours to spare ... YIKES!!!!!To eat up some time, the kids were split into two groups - one started with volunteer pilot Buster Wood, who took them onto the apron for a detailed explanation of the plane and walkaround procedures, while the other group went upstairs with volunteer John Burt for a tour of the equipment in the Weather Office. Because of the conditions, the kids got first-hand experience of watching Ray release a weather balloon, which was quite exciting for them, being able to "help" Ray in the tracking of it. Finally, the weather cleared and just before 1100hrs we gathered up our first 6 kids and commenced flying. EAA members Lorne Schroeder and myself flew a total of 37 of the kids we had registered - a couple had a prior engagement they needed to be at in the afternoon.![]() |
A HUGE THANK YOU to ground volunteers Lorna Schroeder, Joan Bulmer, Jenn MacLeod, Buster Wood, John Burt, Alan Hutchinson, Bob White & George McGuire.Refreshments for the kids (hotdogs and pop) were once again provided by our wonderful sponsor, Solway's Garden Market IGA in Wiarton. A HUGE THANK YOU to Mike and staff for their continued support of our event! We were pleased that many hungry parents/non-participating siblings wandered upstairs to check out the "new" Rooftop Café. Anna Jean & Emily were quite busy filling orders of soup, sandwiches, the daily special, coffee and cappuccino. The opinion of the day from the kids - even after having to wait on the ground for 2 long hours? "Totally Worth It". Want to get away for the weekend on the Bruce Peninsula? Log onto www.cedarholme.bb-bruce.com and check out the wonderful facilities owned and operated by John & Lynn McCurdy. Located about 17km north of Wiarton, Cedarholme is located in peaceful Hope Bay, right on the world-renouned Bruce Trail. Both John & Lynn were raised and schooled in Lion's Head. After high school they parted ways - both seeking higher education for their chosen careers. They met again in Lion's Head a few years later, married, and moved to Chatham, where Lynn taught high school and John worked for the NCR (National Cash Register). After fulfilling careers and raising two sons (both of whom are teachers as well), the pair decided to retire in 2003 and return to their roots on the Bruce Peninsula. They purchased a large 80-year old house in Hope Bay, complete with 6 (4 winterized) self-contained housekeeping cottages on site. The first two floors of the three-story Cedarholme B&B is designed for their guests' enjoyment. Along with the main kitchen, the first floor has a beautiful large dining room and sitting room, while the sleeping quarters (for up to 7) are on the second floor. The house is decorated in a style complimentary to the age of the house, and is kept in immaculate conidtion, both inside and out. There are verandahs on both levels and a large outdoor play area for the kids - or spend some time at the nearby sand beach on the waters of Georgian Bay. For those who travel with their laptops, Cedarholme now has wi-fi internet access. For those who fly into the Wiarton Airport, the McCurdys will personally pick you up and transport you to the B&B. (of course, they will drive you back to the airport when you are ready to leave as well!!) Because Cedarholme is not located close to restaurants, you can make arrangements with Lynn & John to to provide you with dinner and/or a packed lunch. Truly a unique place to visit, any season! ![]() See you at CYVV on August 2nd as we host our Eileen Vollick Celebrations! Harold Fry co-Captain COPA Flight #68 CYVV |
