CO-CAPTAIN's MESSAGE:
Last month we mentioned that there was a problem at our airport between the two municipalities who jointly operate our fine facility over the rightful ownership of the property. The Town of South Bruce Peninsula claim that they own the airport outright, and Georgian Bluffs claim that they own 50% of the airport. Consequently, last month Georgian Bluffs placed a lien on the property, pending a court hearing over the dispute.
On December 24, 2007, the Town of South Bruce Peninsula dropped the other shoe and held a special council meeting, not open to the public, pertaining to the Airport. The outcome of this meeting? South Bruce Peninsula voted, 5-4, in favor of discontinuing any more funds to the Airport, effective January 1, 2009.
In the original agreement formed in May of 1996 between the two municipalities, either party could opt out of their financial support to the airport, after giving a 12-month written notice. This has already been delivered to Georgian Bluffs - so here we sit, not knowing the future of our airport after 2008.
Needless to say, at our regular COPA Flight #68 meeting on Saturday, this was the first item on the agenda. Captain Hank stated the known facts to the outstanding turnout of 20 members, and a lively 1 hour 15 minute discussion followed. It was unanimously agreed that Captain Hank would contact Georgian Bluffs, requesting a meeting with the Mayor to help determine the future of the airport, taking with him the word that we, the members of COPA Flight #68, will do anything humanly possible to save our outstanding facility.

Our group has contributed over 18 000 hours of volunteer time since 1996 when the two municipalities agreed in principal to take over the airport from Transport Canada ... and there are still a lot more hours in us!!

We'll keep you posted.

Back in 2000, COPA Flight #68 initiated the Platinum Triangle Poker Run, with 6 participating airports from Southwestern Ontario, Wiarton/Keppel Airport hosting the event. Since then, the Poker Run has more than doubled in size. To keep things fair and a fun event for everyone involved, the custodians of the event formed a committee to review the rules and operation from the past 7 years and implement any changes needed.
Revisions put into place for 2008 include less work for participating airports. Instruction/Rule packages and supplies will be delivered well before the Run, giving those involved apt time to prepare for the event. Also, our "Jenn" has created a powerpoint presentation all about the run, which I will be presenting at the COPA Flight meetings I attend, as well as the Community Airports Group of Ontario (many of the airports represented there have participated in the run in previous years)
Kincardine (NS7) will be hosting the Platinum Triangle Poker Run for 2008. Through the week of August 18-23, fly to participating airports to collect the individual airports' stamp, then join us at Kincardine on Saturday to draw your cards. Cash prizes for the 5 best hands, plus many additional prizes. Watch here for more details as they become available!
