CO-CAPTAIN's MESSAGE:
2008 has started off as a very busy year for our flight members!

On January 10, Chair Paul Kastner and myself traveled down to Durham to meet with Marilyn Dickson and Akky Mansikka for our first Eileen Vollick committee meeting of the year. Plans for the event are beginning to come together nicely, and as of a week ago, we have had several RSVPs from our special guests indicating that they will be here. We will keep you updated as plans are finalized.

Last month we reported on the ownership of the airport - an issue between Georgian Bluffs and the Town of South Bruce Peninsula. During the first week of January, I received a call from the CAO of Georgian Bluffs, Bill White, asking if I would be willing to present our powerpoint about CYVV to their manage- ment team. I readily agreed, and on the 16th a small group consisting of Bill, Michael Day (operations manager), Holly MacArthur (treasurer) and Bill Klingenberg (chief building official) gathered for the viewing of the presentation. Outstanding dialogue transpired after the powerpoint show, and Bill, on behalf of Mayor Alan Barfoot and Deputy-Mayor Dwight Burley, asked if I would be willing to present the same to their full council. A week later, on the 23rd, I was back at Georgian Bluffs with Captain Hank, where the powerpoint was shown at their regular council meeting. Again, dialogue followed the presentation, and Captain Hank reiterated our pledge - that we at COPA flight #68 are willing to do anything to help save the airport - and emphasized that we would like to be an equal working party with the structuring of the airport towards a more profitable future.

Mother Nature was in a good mood on January 26th, and I was able to join COPA Flight #84 for one of their regular meetings as a guest speaker. Lorne Schroeder traveled to Edenvale with me to help with setup, etc. We showed two powerpoint presentations to Captain Fred Simpson and about 18 Flight #84 members - one regarding the new 406 ELT ruling that goes into effect on February 1, 2009, and the other on the Platinum Triangle Poker Run. Everyone in Flight #84 is looking forward to participating this year! We were also happy to pass along that a new 406 ELT could be purchased from Brant Aero in Brantford - pricing on the two Artex models ranges from $2195-$2895 (plus tax) which is better than the original suggested price of $4000! A few days later I received a wonderful thank-you letter from Captain Fred for speaking at their meeting. Fred, the pleasure was all mine, and I look forward to our next visit!

At our regular monthly meeting this past Saturday, we were pleased to have the mayor of Georgian Bluffs, Alan Barfoot as a guest. Mayor Barfoot took the floor and responded to all the questions posed from our members in attendance. Unfortunately there has been no movement from either side as both mayors have been away on winter vacations. The first problem that needs to be resolved is the rightful ownership of the airport and until this has been sorted out, everything else is more or less at a standstill. Captain Hank once again retiterated what our position was, offered our continued support and thanked him for speaking to us. We will keep you posted as things unfold!

We are proud to say that our float with Willie in his aircraft won 2nd prize for best entry! Thanks to organizer Glenn Goodyear and parade volunteers (Joan, Bob, Lorne, Bob White & Harold Fry) for sticking around after our monthly meeting to participate in the parade!

Until next month!
