CO-CAPTAIN's MESSAGE:
Lorne Schroeder and I took off from the Wiarton Airport enroute to Oshkosh for the AirVenture 2007 Show at 10:30am on July 23. First stop, Drummond Island, in order to clear customs and also close Canadian flight plan and file new USA plan. What a change in customs from 2003 - had to fill in two forms, present aircraft ownership, pilots license and current medical! Took a long time to close flight plan with an individual who was in New Mexico. We found out that the FAA no long was in charge of flight planning but had contracted this responsibility to Lockeed and they are having problems. Next stop was in Menomiee Wis, and once again we had problems closing our flight plan.

Thanks to superb navigation by Lorne, we skirted Green Bay space and went out to New London, and then straight into Ripon and got in line for landing at Oshkosh, no problem! We ended up parking in the north 40 and then traveled to the South end of AirVenture grounds, where we bunked in with Dave Little and son Blaine (home for holidays from Japan, where he lives and works), as our trailer was not scheduled to be delivered until the next day.

The show was great - we saw all the sights, had good weather and took in the air show each day.

Looked forward to seeing the Beach Boys on Monday, but unfortunately we were at the back of the audience - all 20 000 of them standing! Never did get to see them - but did hear them! Stayed for a few songs and then went to dinner. Friday night we joined 700+ others at the Nature Center Pavilion where it was International night for all those folks from abroad such as Germany, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Japan, etc, and of course great Canada! Great night, complimentary dinner and all the free beer you could drink!

The next day we departed for home - first stop in Escanaba Michigan, refueled and headed off for Gore Bay. Over Drummond Island we filed our flight plan with NAV Canada in London -- what a treat to talk to these fine folks, so polite and helpful!! At Gore Bay we met Cheryl Marek and Doug Raine from COPA Flight # 70 (Oshawa), also heading home from Oshkosh.

If you like aviation, it does not get any better than the EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh -- after all, over million visitors a year can't be wrong!!

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the P51 mustang pilot who was killed in the accident on the 27th at the airshow. The 58-yr old pilot along with 5 of his colleagues were performing a simulated air race like they do in Reno, Nevada, and unfortunately, upon landing he was running a little hot and ran into the plane in front of him, chewed off the left rear tail, causing him to flip on his back. The plane in front nosed over into the ditch, with no serious injuries to that pilot. Kudos to the quick action of the fire and crash crews.

I flew over to Collingwood on the 31st to deliver some prizes to our good friend Lee Anne Lehman, and driving force behind the 8th Annual Platinum Triangle Poker Run. This year's event is well on its way to being an outstanding event - there are cash prizes for the 5 top hands, plus a multitude of gifts for the next "bests" .... so be sure to purchase yourself a hand at $5.00 or 5 hands for $20.00 and join in the fun! Don't forget - you can fly your hands any day (or days) between August 13 and 18!

See you at the Poker Run!

AVIATION SCHOLARSHIP:

This year, we are pleased to announce that Cecily Keeshig of Cape Croker is the recipient of the FOTA/COPA Flight #68 Peter Bulmer Memorial Aviation Scholarship award. This year's review board of Joan Bulmer, Harold Fry, Hank Nuis & John Totton met with the applicants throughout July, and considered Cecily to be the most deserving candidate for the award. Cecily had her first taste of aviation at a Young Eagles Day at CYVV, and has since than worked hard to achieve her acceptance at Confederation College Thunder Bay, where she will be in training for a commercial pilot's license. Congratulations Cecily, and good luck with your studies!!
