The month of May certainly has been a busy one from an aviation standpoint ... with lots of news!

The Platinum Triangle Poker Run information kits have been distributed, which means that you can now purchase your hands from your favorite airport!

Our first delivery was to host airport Wingham (CPR7), where we went over the host duties with Denise Lockie and Rod Hickey. They have decided to involve the local air cadet squadron (whom the proceeds will be donated to) in the preparations of the event.
(On a side note - June 2 found me in the air, returning to Wingham with more hands .... Denise and her crew had already sold their initial 250 hands, and requested another 250. WOW!!)

We continued on with the deliveries, hitting Goderich, Kincardine, and Hanover that day. We learned that Kincardine will be installing a new GPS/WASS approach system in June, and also a M3000 card-lock fuel system. Congratulations to Kincardine on their forward thinking!

A week later we were back in the air delivering more packages. Our first stop was Midland, where we learned that Mandy Caldwell was no longer the airport manager ... we met local pilot/COPA Member Bart Parson, who, along with a helper, is filling in as manager until the Airport Board can fill the vacancy.
Edenvale was next, and Airport Manager Milan Kruppa filled us in on their news ... another row of hangars have been built and are quickly becoming occupied, plus a new 4000 foot runway has been constructed and will be paved next month!
Our last stop of the day was Collingwood to visit with Lee Anne Lehman and Pierre Lajoie. Their 5000 foot runway will be will be repaved in late summer. Lots of things going on at area airports!

Flight #68 will be holding our COPA FOR KIDS day on June 20. Details for this fun day are being finalized this week, invitations have been handed out to area schools, and we look forward to seeing many youngsters join us!

The big news around Wiarton is that the Airport Board granted a company by the name of Big Music Fest permission to hold a rock concert on the Airport Property on June 27. The concert, featuring the Tragically Hip, is expected to bring in a healthy sum of money, which is to be divided between the municipalities and the Airport itself.

There will be a NOTAM issued for this day - contact the airport or the Town of South Bruce Peninsula if you have any questions.

Last week, our long-time airport manager Doug Sykes had a mild heart attack and was admitted to the Wiarton Hospital. After tests at St. Mary's in Kitchener, it was determined that no further treatment was needed, but rest was required. On behalf of all of us, Doug, we wish you a speedy recovery .... BUT don't let us catch you back at the airport TOO soon!

This past Saturday it was my pleasure as a COPA Director of South Western Ontario to attend Aircraft Spruce & Speciality Co's grand opening, in their new facilities at the Brantford Airport. Previously located in Mississauga, Ontario, they moved in October 2008 to Brantford. Weather-wise it was a fine day - an estimated over 100 aircraft flew into Brantford (reminded me of a mini-Oshkosh). When we arrived around 10:15am their showroom was already packed with customers, and still was when we left after lunch! There were about 10 vendors present explaining new products, a lucky draw every hour, and lunch provided at no cost! We met Canadian General manager Scott Adams, President and Owner Jim Irwin, and Operations Manager Jeff Irwin (who flew in from the head office in California, USA!) On behalf of COPA, congratulations on your new location and many well wishes for the future!

Hope to see you at our Fly-In on June 11!
