CO-CAPTAIN's MESSAGE:
The place to be on August 2, 2008 is right here with us at the Wiarton/Keppel International Airport (CYVV) as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Canada's first female pilot, Wiarton-born Eileen Vollick!

Eileen was born on August 2, 1908 in Wiarton. At the tender age of 3, her and her family moved to Hamilton, ON, where she lived and went to school. She became very interested in aviation and at the age of 19 learned to fly.

After 16 instructional hours, on March 13, 1928, she soloed in a ski-equipped Curtiss Jenny from the frozen bay at Burlington. She then went on to become Canada's first female to receive her license #77!

In the lobby of our terminal building, there is a plaque recognizing this outstanding lady's contribution to aviation in Canada. The idea to further recognize Eileen was suggested by former Flight #68 member Kelley Bissoni (nee Ramey), and has recently been assumed by member Paul Kastner who is working diligently to make this a reality. It was his idea to include the 99s, (the International Organization of Women Pilots') in the planning of this event ... which is falling into place nicely! The committee of Paul (chair), myself, and 99's representatives Marilyn Dickson & Akky Mansikka promise that August 2 will be a fun day for all, including live entertainment, special guest speakers, a gourmet lunch, and of course the unveiling of a magnificent marker honoring Eileen. More to come on this celebration later!!

(The Planning Committee is looking for a flyable Curtiss Jenny like the one Eileen first soloed in to join us for the event. If you know of such an aircraft, preferably in Ontario, please drop me an email!!)

I had the pleasure of attending my first COPA board meeting on October 26 in Ottawa. It was fantastic to meet and talk with my fellow board members, representatives from coast-to-coast from all walks of life, linked by one common goal - the freedom to fly.

The chair of the board is Bob Kirby from Southern Alberta, who conducted a well-organized meeting from 8:30am until late afternoon. That evening, COPA hosted a reception where over 35 individuals from NAV and Transport Canada, as well as a multitude of folks from the aviation world were in attendance. This was an excellent opportunity to meet these people and discuss problems and opportunities in aviation! A tip of the cap to Kevin Psutka and COPA staff who organized this event -- it is very rare that one gets to meet these individuals outside of their offices.

Now that I have my first board meeting under my belt, I will be starting my mandate to visit individual COPA flights. To end out this year, my first stop is in Burlington with Flight #28 on November 30. December 3 I will be visiting with Owen Sound's flight #144, and with Edenvale's Flight #84 on January 26. I look forward to meeting everyone!!

AVIATION SCHOLARSHIP:

This year, we are pleased to announce that Cecily Keeshig of Cape Croker is the recipient of the FOTA/COPA Flight #68 Peter Bulmer Memorial Aviation Scholarship award. This year's review board of Joan Bulmer, Harold Fry, Hank Nuis & John Totton met with the applicants throughout July, and considered Cecily to be the most deserving candidate for the award. Cecily had her first taste of aviation at a Young Eagles Day at CYVV, and has since than worked hard to achieve her acceptance at Confederation College Thunder Bay, where she will be in training for a commercial pilot's license. Congratulations Cecily, and good luck with your studies!!
